DESIGN THINKING FOR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS
2019-2021

UCSD GLOBAL TIES
http://globalties.ucsd.edu/index.html
Global TIES partners interdisciplinary teams of UC San Diego students with nonprofits and NGOs to co-create solutions to socially urgent problems in San Diego and the developing world.
LANCRRZ
Spring 2021
The goal of this project was to co-create an activity with students exploring their curiosities through inquiry in a hybrid remote / in-person setting.
TRITON TECH
Winter 2021
The goal of this project was to deliver an interactive event that incorporates curiosity and discovery for students during distance learning.
KAMPAR KIDS
Fall 2020
The goal of this project was to create an engaging and interactive kit for distance-learning students to learn with introductory robotics.
Spring 2020
The goal of this project was to co-design a nature-inspired art activity with 4th grade students at HTeCV.

GARDEN REDESIGN
Fall 2019
The goal of this project was to support HTeCV 4th grade students in redesigning the school garden to include an outdoor classroom space.
SOAPY BOIS
Winter 2019
The goal of this project was to support the launch of the third grade class business. We created a booklet of lessons that Ms. Lee can implement with her class and future iterations of the business.
THE WIGGLES
Spring 2018
Next-generation innovators and leaders desperately need a greater understanding of environmental stewardship to develop crucial awareness and be environmentally conscious throughout their lives to increase the sustainability of the Earth.
URBAN HACKS
Winter 2018
To introduce programming and computer science concepts to our community partner, Samantha Lee’s third grade class at Urban Discovery Academy (UDA) in downtown San Diego, we are designing a hackathon for these students. Our hackathon is aimed to encourage the students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields in their future.
HYDROPONIX
Fall 2017
The goal of our project was to create an engaging and interactive educational experience for the students of Samantha Lee’s third grade class at Urban Discovery Academy. This educational experience consists of an aeroponics tower, lesson plan, and manual. All of these components are meant to be used together by Samantha and her students in order to learn more about the concepts involved in hydroponics and aeroponics as well as introduce more greenery into the classroom setting.
B - O - B - A
Fall 2017
The third grade students at Urban Discovery Academy need interactive and engaging lesson plans that encourage collaborative design thinking and expose them to engineering projects because useful human-centered design elements such as empathy are not an integrated part of the current STEAM curriculum.
SIRIUSLY BEST
Spring 2017
The goal of our project is to design lessons on constellations and telescopes for 3rd grade students at Urban Discovery Academy. These lessons must make use of interactive and engaging teaching methods such as project-based learning, self-learning and peer teaching.
S.E.E.S.
Winter 2017
The goals of this project are to aid and enable Ms. Lee’s third grade class to create a functioning compost system for their school and to empower them to become environmental stewards while simultaneously using such opportunities to enhance their understanding of general subjects such as math, science, and design.
C TRASH KIDS
Fall 2016
Our goal was to create lesson plans that would educate, promote awareness, and empower third grade students via problem-solving skills. We wanted to inspire them to be successful codesigners and mini-engineers when it comes to solving a problem like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and Recyclable Materials.
