UDA COMPOSTING PROGRAM

Spring 2018

3rd Grade: Keely McGreevy, Samantha Lee

STEAM: Amanda Nordquist

Essential Question:  How can we collect and use data to improve and redesign our waste reduction program at UDA?

Students evaluated the process of our previous year's 3rd grade launch of the composting program and made recommendations for improvement.  With consultation of UCSD Global TIES team, students researched information on how composting helps the environment and prepared presentations for each classroom at UDA.  Students presented their findings in each class to prepare peers to assist in improving the waste sort during lunch time.  3rd graders served as Food Waste Ambassadors during lunchtime to continue educating peers and to gather the compostable food waste for measurement and tracking.  Students presented their work at Exhibition Night with new prototypes of the waste bins and prepared an interactive booth for UDA's Earth Day festival.

Skills: Problem-solving, Persuasive written and oral presentation, engineering design, graphing and analyzing data, fractions, measurement of length, weight, volume, geometry, life sciences
